I hustled through immigration with Yonasani, dared the subway with him, took the train... explored with him on his discovery of America.

This is a very good travel story, and I felt involved with the boy's thoughts and feelings while he was on his journey.

What an intriguing tale by Kalungi Kabuye. I enjoyed it very much, but I would have loved more. Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson would have written entire books about this trip and this story, intriguing as it was, felt like the summary of a much bigger narrative. I think (in my humble opinion) there are at least three short stories here. The trip from the airport. I appreciate this wasn’t the first visit to America for Yonasani, but I’d loved to have heard more about his sense and thoughts about what he was seeing, hearing, smelling. Then there is the meeting with his cousin – a whole short story set in a single room, and the opportunities for a wonderful dialogue are limitless. I would love to see the transition from the surprise and delight of seeing each other to their frosty departing. The trip on the train (a classic Paul Theroux setting) is the next one and the meeting with the brother. Oh, how I was waiting to read about it, please give us a short story about it! Then the contrast between the views of Yonasani and his fellow Ugandans who have settled in America - another story I’d love to hear in more detail. Actually, that makes at least five. But the thing I would love to see more of is Kalungi Kabuye’s dry sense of humour. I saw a hint of it in the airport. Can we have more of it please!
